What can someone expect from a PHP program?

PHP is a day time level of treatment. Treatment typically takes place 5 days a week for 4 to 6 hours a day and includes therapy sessions. Medication management entails meeting with doctors and other medical staff.  PHP is an intensive treatment due to the requirement of 20 hours per week of therapy along with medication management. Although PHP stands for partial hospitalization program and is an intensive level of treatment, there is no hospital visit. The word ‘hospitalization’ signifies that you will be under the care of a psychiatrist while in the program. Patients at this level of care meet with a medical provider twice weekly for medication management as well as physical and mental evaluation. PHP is a “mid-level”, level of care and more intensive than traditional individual therapy. Patients attend therapy daily and are able to go home each day to spend the evening with their families.

How is a PHP partial hospitalization program beneficial?

The length of time a person is in a partial hospitalization program can vary from 10-30 days depending on what the patient is struggling with  and progress they is making toward their treatment goals. The intake process can vary but typically includes an intake assessment and getting to see the facility. Some programs include some individual therapy while enrolled, most use group therapy. Therapy groups led by therapists work with patients on goal-setting, processing daily challenges, and teaching coping skills to help decrease symptoms. Medication changes occur at PHP level. The patient meets the doctor twice weekly and monitored for any side effects. Treatment teams meet once weekly, including therapy and psychiatry staff. This ensures all staff involved in patient care are aware of progress made. Most facilities are often able to provide both levels of care.
